University swimming pool: 200 ft of 12-inch drain line CIPP lined on the Denver campus

The situation

The university's campus pool had a leaking drain system, and the obvious approach, draining the pool and excavating the deck, would have taken the facility out of use for a long stretch. All Sewer proposed lining the drain lines from the surge tank with the pool only half drained, and worked the plan through with school officials before starting.

The fix

Pool piping is among the harder trenchless jobs: long runs, tight bends and a lot of prep. The crew inspected every line first, on the principle that if one section has failed the rest is not far behind, then shot a single 12-inch liner 200 feet from inside the tank through the pool's drain lines. Saturated with resin, the liner weighed close to 800 pounds going in. Every joint and 90-degree turn was sealed.

The result

The installation itself took a day; the inspection and approvals took longer. The post-lining camera survey and a water leak test both passed. What the administration had expected to be a major, disruptive repair became a short closure with a superior result, and the university has since brought All Sewer back for other campus pipelines.
