Four rooter visits in a year and a 1950s cast iron pipe with no bottom left. The technician lined all 67 feet the day of the inspection rather than risk a collapse.
The homeowner had been having her line cleared for two years, four times in the last twelve months alone. The house dated from the 1950s and so did the cast iron sewer. When the technician ran the camera he found the invert of the pipe, the bottom third, rotted completely away along much of the run: sewage was flowing on soil.
A pipe in that state can collapse at any time, and once it does, lining is no longer possible. The technician showed the owner the video and turned the appointment into a same-day repair, cleaning what was left of the pipe and installing a liner over the full 67 feet. The homeowner, who had expected days of disruption, was close to tears when it was finished that afternoon.
